PATA India in association with India City Walks, conducted a successful heritage walk to the Mehrauli Archeological park on 3rd February 2024. PATA Chapter Members explored Delhi’s Rich History with the Main Mehrauli Hoon Walk,” this immersive experience curated by ‘India City Walks’ took participants through the historical heart of Delhi, showcasing the rich and diverse cultural history. The tour guides walked the participants through the mesmerizing ruins and its fascinating journey through time, providing a unique perspective on Delhi’s evolution.
Mehrauli in South Delhi is home to the 200-acre Mehrauli Archaeological Park, which is right next to Qutub Minar, a World Heritage Site. It is one of the lesser known sites yet full of rich historical culture. This heritage park is also one of the few sites in Delhi that continues to be inhabited in contemporary times. There are more than 100 notable historical monuments there including the ruins of Lal Kot, the oldest existing fort in Delhi which was built by Tomar Rajputs in the 11th century. It also contains architectural remnants from later periods, including those of the Khalji dynasty, the Tughlaq dynasty, the Lodhi dynasty of the Delhi Sultanate, the Mughal Empire, and the British Raj.
PATA India, in collaboration with ‘IndiaCity Walks’, encouraged a sustainable and responsible approach to tourism. The walk was designed to, not only showcase the historical legacy of Delhi, but also to promote awareness about responsible travel practices.
As part of ‘IndiaCity Walks’ commitment to sustainability, the walking tour adhered to eco-friendly principles, ensuring minimal impact on the environment. Participants were encouraged to respect the historical sites they visited, promoting the importance of preservation and responsible tourism.
Around 40 participants joined us on this incredible, engaging, informative journey through Main Mehrauli Hoon – a heritage walk that fulfilled its promise to leave deep appreciation for Delhi’s historical legacy and a commitment to responsible exploration.
